This post opens with an honest statement:
Whenever I see another celebrity endorsed (or designed) product line, I usually roll my eyes and keep on walking. I don't know exactly why, but I guess to wrap it up- I have a hard time believing that these extremely busy celebrities, with zero design school experience or chemistry education, can really have that big of a role in product development. Maybe that is a little harsh... I don't know?
That being said, when I heard about the new makeup line FLOWER developed by Drew Barrymore, I didn't think much about it other than, 'that is a weird name for a makeup line.' Fast forward a few months to when I came upon this issue of Lucky magazine and read up on the development of the makeup line and the meaning behind FLOWER- and my thoughts have changed a
First of all you have to get over the major hump that is: Walmart. Flower is sold exclusively at Walmart. Didn't get this at first, but after reading the interview with Drew, she explained that partnering with a brand that is so HUGE gave her the opportunity to keep cost of development down, and to offer higher quality products at lower prices- simply because of the massive production capabilities Walmart has.
Next, there is the name FLOWER. Drew tells the magazine that she often asks the question 'what kind of flower are you?' when meeting new people. She said that motherhood has changed her, and she has gone from a wild flower daisy to a cottage grown cabbage flower. Interesting idea. I am still working on what type of flower I am- maybe a poppy? (bright colored and imperfect, but with a deep sole in the center... hmm? not sure yet)
After reading about the quality of the products, her choices on packaging and branding, and her experience with makeup throughout her career- I ate my words (or thoughts, I guess) and decided to give FLOWER a chance. In the above picture you can see my product purchases. And if you get nothing else from this post at all, at least visit the FLOWER website. It is gorgeous eye candy to say the least. The images are so colorful and crisp, the text is perfectly paired with the feel of the brand. It is website heaven for anyone who appreciates great design. Check out the behind the scenes photos and videos too.

So, there ya have it. I humbly admit that Drew has done good here, and that she has made me rethink my celeb-brand stonewalling. Next time your at Walmart, take a gander down the makeup isle and pick up a couple goodies.
Have you tried FLOWER products yet? Let me know in the comments below and be sure and follow along with me on facebook and instagram.
What kind of flower are you?
***Update*** Since this post I have tried several other FLOWER Beauty products, and have some other recommendations for your list. The BB Cream serves as a great lightweight coverage foundation, but it's also great as a primer for your mineral makeup.
I am also loving the Lip Butters because they are super moisturizing and perfect for colder weather. 'Princess and the Peony' is my favorite shade!
And lastly if you're looking for a great concealer, the FLOWER Secret Service Cover Up- is a great option. It's got great coverage but it is totally blendable so it can be worn under the eyes or to cover blemishes which is often hard to find in a single product. Love it!
You know I kinda sorta think that same things about celebrity lines! haha Its like they just want to have their hand in everything for the money and exposure! *eye roll* But wow, I loved this post. I didnt know this about her line.
ReplyDeleteLove it, thanks so much for taking the time to share about it and for the swatches. That gold is amazing! Definitely want to head to walmart and check out the flower line now. ♥

Ahhhhh! This makeup feels so light weight! But... it actually covers perfectly! I am sold! Ill never buy another brand again! Thanks Drew!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Sarah! I am glad you like the makeup too!
DeleteI bought some of Drew's makeup line to try and I really was wanting to like it. I bought a press base powder and found the first ingredient to be TALC. I was looking at her website about the product and seen that this product was listed as being talc free, and I was disappointed when I got home and seen the list of ingredients. With that said, some of the products I really liked, for instance the eyeliner, cream shadow, a couple of lip sticks. I was looking for a inexpensive talc-free pressed base.
ReplyDeleteJust noticed this brand at Walmart and decided to Google it when I got home. I think I'm going to try their eyeliner since I'm still in search for the perfect one from the pharmacy for me :)

I LOVE the foundation. I like mine to be very light weight with a natural feel (something I've only really found with Bobbie Brown), and this foundation pulls it off wonderfully. Thanks for the review -- you're the reason I even gave it a chance!
ReplyDeleteHi Baylee! I'm so glad you are liking the foundation! I have really loved it too- especially in warmer months when I want a lightweight version too. Thanks for letting me know!
DeleteI bought the Eye Marker & Volumizing Mascara In Midnight Blue, upon opening it the mascara was clumpy, almost dried out. I bought this mainly because you never see mascara in any type of blue color, and this to me did not resemble Midnight Blue at all it looked like Black, both the mascara and liner side, if I could find my reciept I would be returning it. Please make a true blue color and I would try it again. Kandi McDonald

In the above picture you can see my product purchases. Suzanne Somers Coupon
ReplyDeleteI love the eyebrow pencils. It's always been impossible to find a brow pencil that blends easily and looks natural. Flower accomplished both! I recently tried the mascara, love it! I can't wait to try more from the Flower line!
ReplyDeleteI purchased the Flower liquid eye liner in black. The package says that it is smudge proof and all day wear. Unfortunately, this is untrue. Besides being difficult and painful to apply, the liner required multiple coats to look right and began to smudge before I could even get out the door. The made in America label is why I made the purchase but I will go back to Loreal for inexpensive true to packaging liquid eye liner.
ReplyDeleteHi Cassie- sorry to hear about your experience with the liner. I think the formula has changed recently, along with much of the packaging. Because it is a new line, I imagine that many of the formulas will change during the first few years. Thanks for letting me know however- and I hope to see you around the blog again soon!
DeleteI have tried so many foundations and it's really hard to find one with yellow undertones and for dry skin. This foundation took care of both of my needs!!!! I will continue to use this foundation for as long as it's available. Thanks Drew don't change a thing and please don't discontinue:)
ReplyDeleteDid I mentioned that they DO NOT TEST ON ANIMALS??? YAY! :D
ReplyDeleteI love these products especially since they do not test on animals. I came across these products when I was looking for reasonably priced cosmetics. I bought the high shine lipstick in a barbie pink and Waterproof Three Brush Mascara. Both are great. The only thing is the mascara started clumping my eyelashes together after a few uses making it appear like I have no eyelashes. I might need to switch back to Maybelline Mascara.

ReplyDeleteSaw the FLOWER brand at Sam's Club and Bought a combo pack of the mascara, 4-color shadow, and longwear eye liner. I am always wanting to try new beauty products! My experience is that the eyeliner is longwear for sure. Needed to remove it with eye makeup remover and still had some residue the next morning. The shadow is very flaky. I am noticing that all of the colors are a little loose after using the applicator and they are mixing with one another--this is indicitive of cheap eye shadow. Finally the mascara was much too clumpy. I had to wipe the brush on a damp cloth to remove the clumps before applying. To be fair, I have had to do this with much more expensive brands as well.

ReplyDeleteThat's interesting, I am surprised that it is available there- I thought was exclusive only to Walmart. I wonder if it's a slightly different (less quality) formulation, as that is often the case for products sold at Sams and Costco...? I'll look in to it, thanks for the comment

I can totally see why you didn't want to try a celeb endorsed line. But there's something about Drew, I've never though of her as a douche haha. I don't even remember how I discovered the line but I was impressed with their no ad way and decided I'd given them a try. I truly respect what they are doing and even more so for being cruelty free. I got a brush and a lip chubby (haha) and love them both. I am going to try their foundation this week as I am tired of being orange from Smashbox and want something more affordable. It sounds like good quality from good people, and that's what I want.
